    • On March 13, 2020, Governor Greg Abbott declared a state of disaster for all counties in Texas due to the threat of COVID-19. Governor Abbott issued a statement on March 16, 2020, granting a temporary extension to obtain initial registration, renewal of registration, and renewal of a permanent disabled parking placard. Governor Abbott also granted a temporary extension for an individual with an expired 30-day temporary permit to obtain another permit or Texas registration.

The temporary waiver applies to vehicle owners in all Texas counties as set forth in the above-referenced statement. The temporary waiver grants an extension for initial issuance of registration, renewal of registration, renewal of a permanent disabled parking placard, and issuance of a 30-day temporary permit needed to operate a vehicle on public roads. The TxDMV will provide notice when normal registration, permanent disabled parking placard renewal and permit issuance services have resumed. The waiver is in effect until 60 days after the notice is provided and applies to all counties.

The purpose of the waiver is to prevent customers from having to physically visit a county tax assessor-collector office to obtain initial registration or a 30-day temporary permit (when the persons 30-day temporary permit expired); or to renew registration or a permanent disabled parking placard. Customers may continue to renew their registration online at www.TxDMV.gov.

The department will notify you when Normal registration, permanent disabled parking placard renewal and permit issuance services have resumed.

The department will notify law enforcement of the temporary waiver, and we will inform the motoring public of the extension granted by the temporary waiver.

      Thank you,

      Jeremiah Kuntz, Director
      Vehicle Titles and Registration Division
      Texas Department of Motor Vehicles

    Delinquent Tax Penalty & Interest

Taxes not paid by January 31st will increase as follows:

IF TAX IS PAID IN MONTH SHOWN ADD PENALTY + INTEREST = TOTAL PERCENTAGE.  ALL PENALTY & INTEREST START TO ACCRUE ON 1ST OF THE MONTH.

    February 6% + 1% = 7%
    March 7% + 2% = 9%
    April 8% + 3% = 11%
    May 9% + 4% = 13%
    June 10% + 5% = 15%
    July 12% + 6% = 18%

Accounts not paid in full by June 30th of the year in which they become delinquent will be referred to the delinquent tax attorney for enforced collection, and will incur an additional penalty up to 20% of the total taxes, penalties, and interest due.

Taxpayers with an over–65 or disabled person exemption

ONLY taxpayers with an Over-65 or Disabled Person Exemption may pay current taxes on their homestead residence in four installments without penalty or interest; however, the taxpayer MUST request the quarter payments in writing and MUST pay at least:

¼ of the payment by January 31
    ¼ by March 31
    ¼ by May 31
    ¼ by July 31

If an installment is missed, the full 12% penalty is imposed and interest begins to accrue.
